Joubert Malherbe Architects was borne from the calling to create spaces for living that are sensitive to both the natural environment and the individuality of the inhabitants.
We believe that every building should feel like home, and we delight in the practice of taking each client through a process of discovery to achieve this. The buildings we inhabit shape our daily experience, and much of this lies in the details of architecture: light, textures, sightlines, and, most significantly, connections to the natural world. Establishing a benevolent relationship between the built and natural environments is the driving force behind our work.
Founded by Ceoné Joubert and Gideon Malherbe, the practice draws on a diverse specialist skillset:
-
environmentally sustainable design; through material selection, construction methodology, and understanding resource usage during the building's lifecycle
-
critical design; Focusing on the natural context, heritage and local vernacular of a site
-
project and team management; suited to sensitive and remote locations
We have experience in various project scales and types, from bespoke homes to residential developments, including landscape and garden design. Additionally, we have worked on commercial and educational buildings. Our favourites have been where the client has a personal connection to the project. We channel their passion into creating meaningful architecture that is both beautiful and indispensable.
Ceoné Joubert
Ceoné’s design approach is rooted in the natural world. Her work establishes meaningful connections between indoors and outdoors by celebrating natural lighting, creating framed views and designing for moments and experiences in and around the building. The expression of raw materials and textures enhances the architecture's tactile qualities. Ultimately, her work grounds the inhabitant in their experience and memories of the space.
She loves learning about a client's unique needs, daily rituals and routines and incorporates this knowledge in a way that simplifies living.
Her interests and passions include travel, exploring our South African national parks, good food and wine, and spending time in nature. Ceoné completed a Master's in Architecture at the University of Cape Town, focusing on sustainable and ethical architecture in a natural context.

Gideon Malherbe
Gideon grew up living close to nature in a Cape farm home near the Langeberg. His childhood context and memories greatly influenced his Master's in Architecture research on contemporary vernacular.
This interest is reflected in his work, where he prioritises using local craftsmanship and materials while searching for more sustainable and economical ways of building. In addition, he enjoys working with the builder and consultants in achieving the client brief through a logical and straightforward approach to design that rejects the repetition of ideas.
Gideon is skilled in bespoke structural and interior detailing, with a good eye for overall architectural coherence and balance. He works thoughtfully to design meaningful spaces that offer a feeling of being sheltered. As a result, the architecture he creates has an implied and ageless beauty.
Construction sites and buildings have enthralled him from a very young age, and they continue to do so. Aside from architecture, his interests include the art of Bonsai, cooking and architectural education.
